Things to Do When You’re Bored

Hello everyone!

I was recently inspired by Youtube gal Nikki Phillippi for this next post. It’s rare that I find myself bored lately, yet, when it does happen, I’m always surprised that I have zero idea what to do with myself. When all your errands are done, and all your social obligations long over, I never know what I can do that’s both productive and…well…relaxing at the same time So, here are a few things that I like to do when I’m feeling a bit restless, or need a little pick-me-up.

…Bake. That’s right. Just bake whatever you feel like. Cookies, bread, cakes, that weirdly complicated shortbread recipe, just go for it. You’ll feel accomplished, your house will smell amazing, and you’ll have something delicious to eat…

…If you’re terribly girly, like me, give yourself an at-home manicure. Similarly, if you’re particularly coordinated, try doing a little nail art! You can find hundreds of simple tutorials online. If you’re not a DIY kinda gal, just go get them done. You deserve it…

…While I love reading, I sometimes find it hard to focus when I’m bored or feeling restless. Listening to audiobooks is a great alternative for those days where you just want to lay in bed and do nothing…

…Go thrifting! I’m very much guilty of doing this. If you’re not one for wandering about aimlessly while shopping, set your mind to something that you really need- anything from coffee mugs to a trench coat. It’s like a treasure hunt!….

…Go on a drive! I’m totally guilty of arbitrarily wanting to go visit an obscure coffee shop or restaurant, and making an entire trip out of it. Sometimes I’ll drive up to the North Bay just for a particular sandwich or into San Francisco for a doughnut. I enjoy getting to my destination as much as being there…

…Nest or rearrange furniture. There’s no better feeling than making progress on your space. I don’t really enjoy the process of cleaning up, but I do so love the end result…

…Call old friends to catch up! This is especially nice if you find yourself having a quite day, and in need of some good company…

The list goes on and on! What do you like to do in those moments of boredom?

Five Things

Hello all!

Happy Wednesday! We’ve officially made it halfway through the week. Who else has a long weekend to look forward at the end of Friday? While I’m still teaching classes as usual, I’m glad to have a little time to breathe on Monday before diving back into my routine. Meanwhile, the final thing on today’s very long agenda was to finish off with this week’s Five Things. (Hint: it’s rather food/San Francisco-heavy. Pretty typical for Watch Me Juggle at this point!) Hope you enjoy!

IMG_3364

Voilà! A peek at my Sunday brunch! I love salmon and cucumbers, so why not together? I was surprised at how beautiful it all looked.

IMG_3370

This is what I did on my lunch break today.

A quick trip to Chantal Guillon for macarons could instantly cheer anyone up. The Persian rose flavor there was so amazing!

IMG_3266

A girlfriend of mine sent this to me via Instagram the other day. It melted my heart. Yes, I give myself a pep talk sometimes, just like that chubby bunny.

IMG_3375

I was on a phone call today and sat down in a rather unassuming courtyard in the financial district of San Francisco. It wasn’t until I started looking around that I really appreciated this fantastic view.

There’s a fabulous new ballet documentary coming out this Friday! Who’s coming with me to see it?

Until next time,

EVA♥

I-G-G-Y

Hello everybody!

It was pouring rain here in the Bay Area yesterday, so I took some time out on my Sunday to decompress at home. Cleaning, writing, running errands- incredibly fascinating and innovating stuff, right? Those of you that know me aside from Watch Me Juggle, know that I have really eclectic taste in music. I mean, borderline schizophrenic here. One minute I’m listening to Phillip Glass on piano, and the next I’ve pulled up some new Nicki Minaj, only to stop the song half-way through to listen to some Billie Holiday instead. I’m a strange individual when it comes to music. Since the start of 2015, however, I’ve been listening to one particular artist more consistently than usual: Iggy Azalea.

iggy2

You might know her from her infamous, Clueless-inspired “Fancy” music video, or her recent collaborations with Jennifer Lopez and Ariana Grande. I’ve always enjoyed the occasional Top 40 and hip-hop, but I’ve whole-heartedly jumped on the Iggy Azalea bandwagon. I didn’t really give it much thought, until I heard a little spot on NPR radio discussing recent trends among female artists in popular music (a similar article was written here). One of the things I love about Iggy Azalea and her music is touched upon here. Despite being very much in the minority in her industry (an Australian, Caucasian woman), she’s appropriated a lot of stereotypical  male traits. Her attitude is “distinctly masculine,” and many of her lyrics are centered around money and becoming increasingly successful. In a music genre that’s entirely male-dominated and defaults to putting women on display, typically as background dancers or arm candy, she’s decidedly mercenary. That’s really what I like about her.

iggy4

Don’t get me wrong- Iggy certainly has no problem capitalizing on her sex appeal, but she does it on her own terms. She has, for a lack of a better expression, a devil-may-care attitude. She’s photographed out and about without makeup as much as she is with waist length extensions and sky-high stilettos. She gets quite a bit of flack for this, don’t get me wrong, but I admire the confidence she exudes- it comes across in her music. So, whenever I’m feeling a bit lackluster, I like to put on some Iggy Azalea and pretend like I have a hell of a lot of attitude, with no cares in the world.

iggy5

Just some thoughts.

Five Things

Hello all!

Today was my first full day of work in the office, and I’ve decided to celebrate a job well done with a fresh batch of brownies. I was a bit worried about how my week would pan out, and I’m pleasantly surprised. Sure, I’m busy, but it doesn’t seem unreasonable- in fact, it’s sort of nice. I commuted by ferry into San Francisco today, which is a wonderful way to decompress both before and after work. And, thanks to my brownie adventure, I’ve also discovered another big perk of living alone: no one is around to see your batter-covered face lick the whisk. It’s one of those things you know is 800 kinds of wrong as you do it, but that certainly doesn’t stop you.

Now that I’ve proven my adulthood through the course of the day (Emails! Phone calls! Unburnt dinner!), I’m looking forward to sharing this last week’s Five Things with you, dear readers. Off we go!

IMG_3310

The last throwback photo from the San Francisco Ballet’s gala a few weeks ago. I love this picture I took of the flower arrangements adorning each bar. They guaranteed that you always had something pretty to look at while waiting for your glass of prosecco.

IMG_3349

I allowed myself one coffee break during the day, so I made sure it was a good one. This Blue Bottle kiosk seems to have lines at all hours of the day, despite being tucked away in its own little niche in Hayes Valley.

IMG_3354I recently discovered a new favorite Instagram account: @iamhertribe. It’s inspirational without being schmaltzy, and I find myself relating to every post lately. Just “go dancing or something…”

IMG_3355

One of my students gifted me these beautiful, handmade earrings last week. It was such a sweet gesture, and exactly what I needed when I was feeling less-than-stellar. The young dancers I work with have so much potential- I hope I’ll get to see what they’ll be doing with their bright futures. Good kids, all of them.

IMG_3358

I found these new and very bright blue suede and cork wedges from DV by Dolce Vita at the local Salvation Army the other day. I took advantage of the oddly warm weather and wore them out last Saturday night with a pair skinny jeans. They made me at least a foot taller! I amused myself by hitting every crosswalk button I came across with my knee, I was that tall.

Typical Watch Me Juggle shenanigans…

Walks with Theo.

Hello everyone!

IMG_3343 IMG_3346 IMG_3344

IMG_3347

This last Saturday we experienced some unseasonably warm weather. I’m even beginning to feel a bit guilty. While the rest of the country was being blanketed by snow, my friend Sarah and I took a leisurely walk around Lake Temescal with her pup Theo. It was a great way to end my roller coaster-like week. I just threw on my “I Woke Up Like This” shirt after teaching a couple of dance classes and we headed out. There are few friends that I’ve had as long in my life as Sarah. It’s strange to think that, even though 10 years have passed, we’re still doing the same sorts of things, albeit with a little more freedom and the occasional cocktail. We talked about work, dates we’d been on, and the latest developments at the dance studio.

I feel like talking to a good friend can cure an innumerable amount of ills, whether you’re just feeling restless or have big life decisions to make. When I first starting writing on Watch Me Juggle, I had just quit my corporate job, and was looking for a solid direction for my life. Now that I know I’m not the kind of person who can sit at a desk all day, every day, what exactly was I meant to do? Almost everyone I know has a “traditional” desk job, so deviating from that seemed reckless, scary, even. So I spent a little over a year figuring things out. Writing to my heart’s content, picking up jobs where I could, and paying my bills along the way. Having an unstable work schedule does take its toll, so when I was offered a solid position with the ballet company I occasionally work for I was both extremely excited and extremely nervous. I felt like things where happening at me, and that I was suddenly being made to choose between two things I enjoyed doing. Under the pressure, it became apparent to me how much I loved teaching dance, and that I wouldn’t be able to let it go anytime soon, if ever. Just when I was making the decision to walk away from the more stable job I was offered, things suddenly fell into place. In life, sometimes you have to stand up for the things you want. Sometimes, you have to be willing walk away for better things to come along. They might not come in the form you imagined, and it might not be as easy as you thought, but I’m convinced it’s worth it.

Yes, we covered all this on our walk with Theo. When you’re lucky enough to have friends you can rely on, and who will give you advice when asked or listen to you without judgement, don’t let them go (obviously). I would have hard time making all my decisions with out them. Well, I could have done it, but it sure wouldn’t have been as fun…

And then we went out for ice cream.

Sportsball.

Hello everyone!

As many of you have already gathered, I sometimes like to use my blog as a way to vent everyday observations and frustrations. Remember the  “Letters to Everything” jag I was on a while back? Well, this is a bit like that, but perhaps more topical.

….

Today, in honor of Superbowl XLIX, I thought I would talk about exactly why really don’t like football. I’m one of those people that’s more excited about the Superbowl commercials than the actual Superbowl. While the game is on, you can find me lurking about the chip bowl, doing things like this:

washington-state-fan-popcorn

or this:

can-I-have-4-beers

With this general expression:

eminemfb

As a matter of fact, I’m watching Crazy, Stupid Love for what feels like the hundredth time, because anything is better than football right now.

I feel like this statement by itself somehow marks me as fundamentally unpatriotic. If I’m an American and, for whatever reason, don’t enjoy my country’s national sport, I must also secretly hate puppies and sunshine, or something. Don’t get me wrong, I gave football a chance; but, it was only after being forced to watch football almost every Sunday for the past year that I really began to realize my distaste for it. What certainly doesn’t help is the fact that I have absolutely no idea what’s going on for 90% of the game, and no one will bother explaining anything to me. That’s right: while you’re busy yelling all the plays and penalties along with the game, I’m looking longingly out the window and thinking of all the mimosas I could be drinking at a sidewalk cafe. Even better, when I try to relate to whatever the hell is going on in a game, I somehow turn into the afternoon entertainment, because it’s obvious how inept I am when I ask if the Atlanta team is called the Braves. Is there some sort of stupid football manual I didn’t read as a child because I was too busy doing all my homework?! I feel as if I’ve been ostracized from a bunch of experiences just because I was the kind of kid that ducked when someone threw a ball. It’s gotten to the point where I won’t even pretend to know the first thing about it, and I’ve taken to lovingly calling it the “Sportsball.”

My aversion to football isn’t just purely emotional, mind you. I dislike the vast expense of football, not to mention the toll it takes on the people involved in playing the actual game. These men have made millions of dollars beating the living daylights out of their bodies for the average Joe’s entertainment, but imagine what American society would look like if we took a fraction of the money we spend on football and put it into public education? It’s no shocker that other countries are passing us up when our values are so whacked. Also, as someone who was once an athlete (I trained an average of six hours a day for years. And yes, dance is an athletic endeavor.) in an incredibly undervalued field, I get really bothered by the amount of money spent on football. Most American Olympic athletes make almost no money for a lifetime of hard work. We parade them around as representatives of our great nation, and, in the end, they’re lucky to be sent home with an extra $10, 000 in their pockets if they win. Just some things to think about, America.

And lastly, to all the sportsball-oriented gentlemen out there, let me put it this way:

Do you like shopping for high heels? No.

Let me do my thing, and I’ll let you do yours. Thanks.

Love,

Five Things

Hello all!

It’s rare that I miss a “Five Things” Wednesday. Of course, I’m typing this on Thursday, so that’s slightly embarrassing in and of itself. I’ve had quite the whirlwind of a week. That’s the best way to describe it, I’ve found. Many exciting and interesting things going on behind the scenes at Watch Me Juggle. Stay tuned for updates!

Today, I just want to share five little things that I stumbled across during the course of the chaos. Luckily, no flat tires were included!

IMG_3337

I recently visited Monk’s Kettle in the Mission district of SF. They have a fantastic beer selection and possibly one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. I’m sure I’ll be back.

IMG_3315

“What exactly is this a picture of?” you might ask. I decided to get a little creative and snap a shot of the illuminated dome inside city hall during last week’s San Francisco Ballet opening night after party. It’s beautiful from all angles, really.

IMG_3339

A fabulous shirt I got as a Christmas gift from my friend, Rachel. I wore it today with pride, accompanied by wet hair and a bare face. It felt quite good.

IMG_3341

This week, my lovely students gifted me my very first Alex & Ani bangle. It’s a mermaid, in honor of our upcoming performance. It was such a sweet gesture. I’ve worn it everyday since receiving it.

Cinnamon-Rolls-9

Photo c/o Foodie Fiasco.

I’m totally inspired by Foodie Fiasco’s extensive food blog. Exactly how can one make delicious cinnamon rolls in 30 minutes and with a few simple ingredients?! They really do look amazing. Join me in some kitchen experiments and try out the recipe here. I will report back!

San Francisco Ballet Gala 2015: Infinite Romance

Hello everyone!

I’m still alive and kicking, despite having caught ‘the sick’ that seems to be going around everywhere these days. You would think that I would be taking things relatively easy considering, but no- I find myself just as busy, if not more than usual!

On the topic of being busier than usual, last week I worked all three jobs that I’m currently juggling, and had the pleasure of attending San Francisco Ballet’s opening night gala performance (you can find my review from last year’s here)! My father thoughtfully bought the whole family tickets for the evening as a Christmas gift back in December.

IMG_3306 IMG_3307

We kicked off the evening with the sold-out performance at the War Memorial Opera House. I found this year to be quite different from past performances as it primarily consisted of duets including only the principal artists of the company, as well as student showcase.  While the student piece was choreographed by Helgi Tomasson himself, I was disappointed at how little dancing the students and trainees actually did. Quite honestly, it was five minutes of technically perfect walking, bowing, and standing in formation. The following piece, an excerpt from “Alles Walzer,” was a reprise from the year before, and a rather lighthearted way to begin the program. The majority of the pieces performed were highly romanticized duets, perhaps as a nod to the evening’s theme. From Act II from “A Cinderella Story,” to “Borealis” accompanied by a cellist onstage, we saw a number of tumultuous relationships unfold onstage. Albeit some of them, as with the pas de deux from “Onegin,” seemed melodramtic whe performed entirely out of context. Unfortunately, as Alan Ulrich pointed out in his review for SF Gate, because the program itself was shuffled around and performed out of order, I had a hard time figuring out who was performing what. I echo his sentiments that the two group pieces were the highlight of evening- I especially enjoyed the excerpt from “The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude.” The program concluded with the classic pas de deux from “Le Corsaire,” which less-than-subtly showed off Tara Domitro and Vanessa Zahorian’s dancing.

Now, for the fun part: After-Party in city hall!

Behold! The crowd:

(Just in case you forgot you were at a ballet gala’s afterparty: pointe shoes/ballerinas everywhere!)

I asked my parents to take a few photos of me, which quickly turned into an amusing photoshoot in the corner by the bar. They were both pointing their smartphones at me, while I stood around and attempted to look nonchalant holding two glasses of prosecco. The above was the most flattering of the bunch. My mother and I then ended up taking selfies while I attempted to drink my ticket’s value in prosecco. I was determined to get my money’s worth, what can I say? With food, drinks, a great band, and multiple dance floors to keep you entertained, I think it would be impossible to attend this event and not have a good time. There’s always the possibility of running into very well-know figures in the ballet world, as well. My mother finally got to speak to one of her favorite dancers from the company, Yuan Yuan Tan, and I managed to meet some rather intriguing people myself! In case you were wondering, I ended up wearing a fabulous sheer chiffon mermaid-style skirt (from Urban Outfitters, see it here), along with a wrap that was admittedly dancewear. My studded Valentino look-alikes and my Marrin Costello bowzer bracelets made an appearance as well.

The evening was so enjoyable, we ended up staying until 1:30am, when the city hall security began to politely escort us out.

Black tie success.

Five Things

Hello all!

I must say, it’s really hard to multitask when you want to be 100% engrossed in all of the things you’re attending to. Do any of you ever experience this? I certainly do. It’s, unfortunately, the reason why it takes me at least three times longer than usually to finish whatever I’m writing.  It’s because, in the meantime, I’m attempting to watch “Game of Thrones,” make tea, and clean my house . So far, the tv is paused and my hot water has yet to make it into the cup where the teabag is. Hey, I tried.

I did, however, manage to crank out this week’s “Five Things,” so let’s hop to it!

IMG_3284

It’s official. I now own work swag. Not only do I love the company, but their hoodies are the most cozy things ever. I’ve been trying not to live in it on a daily basis.

IMG_3296

I was looking through some pictures from my hike up Mt. Tam the other day, and lo-and-behold, a photo-bomber! Hi Gary! I just had to share.

IMG_3272

My girlfriends and I had a mid-week dinner date at Chino SF the other day. They boast an interesting take on Chinese cuisine. My favorite (although slightly gimmicky) thing was the boba cocktail. Quite refreshing, actually.

IMG_3145

Tiny cupcakes courtesy of my friend Sarah. Cute and delicious, although I must say that the ones topped with chocolate chips seemed a tad inappropriate.

And, in case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s my new favorite Instagram account:

omg-literally-dead

Photo c/o: @omgliterallydead.

It’s the infamous: Omg Literally Dead. A fabulous 30-something out there thought it would be poignant to spoof all those Instagram-abusers out there, overusing hashtags and all. The photo above was captioned: “Ugh, #Starbucks barista fails again! It’s Skellie, idiots.#starbucksfail #psl #whothehellisskully.” As you can see Skellie is, in fact, literally dead. So take that!

Sometimes Life Gives You a Flat.

Hello all.

It is due to recent, slightly unfortunate events that I came up with today’s post headline.

IMG_3303 IMG_3304 IMG_3302

When I left my job at Smuin Ballet this morning, I walked out to my car to find a note, and a very flat back tire. So flat that the rubber had puddled on the ground around it. Ever seen one of those? Well, that was my tire- comically deflated while simultaneously giving me the middle finger. I’ve changed a tire before, but always with someone else around to help, so I didn’t trust myself to do it properly. I had to wait almost two hours under a freeway overpass before AAA came to my rescue. It was a miserable way to spend an afternoon, quite frankly. I did, however, get quite a bit of thinking done. I wondered why the universe had sent me yet another flat tire (the last one was three weeks ago), and why, especially when I made an extra effort to be on top of things, something always seems to go awry. I came to these conclusions:

Sometimes, life gives you a flat tire just to show you that there are some decent people out there. If that person hadn’t made a little extra effort on their morning commute, I might have attempted to drive on without noticing my flat. I could have damaged my car, or even gotten into an accident on my way home. Thanks, whoever-you-are. Sorry about your pen.

Sometimes, life gives you a flat tire when you feel yourself getting complacent. You know what’s worse than having a flat? Having no job to commute to and no one to call when things go wrong. I had more people than I could count who would listen to me bitch about something as silly as a tire.

Sometimes, life gives you a flat tire when you think everything is falling into place. Don’t feel bad, or stupid about being fleetingly happy where you are, but know that these little dips in the road are a part of life. It’s like Isadora Duncan said: “the deeper the sorrow, the more colorful the joy.”

Sometimes, life gives you a flat tire when you have places to be and things to do. Your annoying flat tire is teaching you to roll with the punches. Do as much as you can, and remember that you often can’t control what happens to you. But, you can control the kind of person you become when bad things happen.

Sometimes, life gives you a flat tire when you least expect it. See, I thought my tire was perfectly fine. I had it checked less than a month ago. Sometimes, even when you think you’re being smart about your decisions the universe has other things in mind for you. Your flat tire might come in many different shapes and sizes, but don’t let it stop you.

Fix it, and just keep going.
