Sandwich Mondays

Hello everyone!

I hope I’m finding you well on this beautiful day.

Now, as a former 9-to-5er, I know that Mondays can be a less than pleasant experience. So today I wanted to share with you a little something that helped me look forward to my Mondays in the office, as opposed to wanting to call in sick consistently for the entire week. With my previous job starting at what I would deem the crack of dawn (I was getting up to go to work in the middle of the night, essentially) we had our first official break at 9:30am. As this is traditionally more around breakfast-time than 5am for me, my little Monday routine would consist of having a little food and perusing the NPR website. I always started at the performing arts pages and slowly moved to world news. My favorite article, however, was a little feature called “Sandwich Monday.” Brought to you by the same team as “Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me!” the weekly posts feature a team of NPR staffers, sampling the most horrendous cuisine you can think of. They are effectively the guinea pigs for mutant American fast food concoctions, complete with candid, unflattering photos and snarky one-liners.  I’m sure you’ve heard that Taco Bell is serving breakfast now? Never fear, their latest review of the Waffle Taco was both informative and terrifying. I’m glad their brave souls could stomach something they described as having looked as if  one “used a taco to pick up something [the] dog left behind.”

So now I don’t have to.

IMG_1360

(Screenshot!)

While I’m not entirely sure what thought process is behind their meal choices, you have to give them credit for creativity. For Christmas, they recreated the “Grinch Sandwich.” You know, the one described in the song: “a three-decker toadstool and sauerkraut sandwich… with arsenic sauce.” Arsenic sauce was not handy, so Sriracha was the most appropriate substitute. Also featured are beauties such as the Fritos chicken enchilada sub from Subway, the Carl’s Jr. Pop Tart ice cream sandwich, and the veritable Frankenstein of burgers: the McCamembert. Which is apparently an actual thing in France. Shame on you, McDonalds. Now sometimes their features are not necessarily sandwiches, but let’s be honest, someone has to try that  Mountain Dew A.M. monstrosity. All in all, the voyeur and the foodie in me are both satisfied in one go with Sandwich Monday. Unlike the rest of NPR, it’s sarcastically hilarious while simultaneously lacking a filter and any sense of shame. If I can make a horrible sandwich pun- to me, it’s the best thing since sliced bread.

Now, go enjoy!

Love,

Taco Tuesday

Hello dear readers!

IMG_1279

IMG_1278

Today, I wanted to share with you a little tradition some good friends of mine have started: Taco Tuesday!

Let me start by saying that, yes, I am aware that it is not yet Tuesday, it is in fact Friday. I am also aware of the fact that while I spend a night in, sipping my Tazo Rest tea and watching reruns on TLC, there is nothing that I would rather reminisce about.

While it’s true that Taco Tuesday has long been a thing, I wanted to share with you my own experiences with it, and how it’s become something that I look forward to every week. I believe it was the brainchild of two of my friends, Jessie and Rachel, who have recently moved in together along with Rachel’s mysterious older brother, and the oft featured Maddie the dog. Thus far, our taco Tuesdays have never featured the same group of people twice, or the same exact range of ingredients twice. This last week, it was just the three of us along with Maddie, so we had a less than ceremonious table-setting and were dressed primarily in sweats.

IMG_1277

(I apologize for the fantastic jumble of food (and the random paperclip), containers, and paperwork. I remembered to document the fantastic meal after we had already dug in.)

Jessie is the expert when it comes to creating homemade crispy taco shells- something that I long thought was not possible without magical powers. I’ve watched her craft them several times, and it turns out that all you need are some good corn tortillas, a skillet, tongs, and oil. Gently fold and fry, let them drip off, and voilà! You have delicious taco shells. Our filling of choice is chicken, simmered in broth and spices until it can be easily shredded. Any leftovers make for fabulous lunch additions the day after. This week, we also created instant guacamole: simply mash a ripe avocado with some salsa and add any spices to taste. Along with the main ingredients, we like to include a variety of sauces, cheese, fresh tomatoes, sour cream, and lettuce. There’s a little something for everyone and everyone can create a meal to their own liking. Rachel, in the meantime, often makes a quick and easy margarita by simply mixing tequila, triple sec, and a bit of good limeade (Odwalla makes the best!). Topping your glass off easily with some chunky margarita salt makes it feel extra indulgent.

What makes taco Tuesday so wonderful, aside from the delicious food, is the opportunity to get together and share a simple meal with good friends. I’ve always enjoyed having roommates, having had wonderful experiences sharing many a meal with them, and I often miss coming home to that feeling of community. I feel like I have a bit of that back now, and I so enjoy it. (If you’re reading this ladies, we need to have taco Tuesdays forever! Or, when we get sick of tacos, we can always evolve: Fettucine Fridays, Mediterranean Mondays, whatever!)

So, if you’re out there, occasionally missing a home-cooked meal, grab some friends, throw together a Facebook event, and pick a relatively simple recipe. Good things will happen.

Have a great weekend! I’m off to the Treasure Island Flea Market!

Las Vegas Adventures

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I made it back alive.

I’m back to the adult world of bills and errands. And it’s raining. I’m trying not to be too sad about it, and part of me is genuinely glad. I can now do socially acceptable things like sleep, buy a Starbuck’s latte for under $4, and re-hydrate. Despite my previous post on what to bring to Vegas, I found myself failing to heed my own advice. Yes, ibuprofen was needed. Did I bring some? Of course not! I would also like to add that, should one be spending anytime poolside, remember to bring a hat and a lip balm with SPF protection. My scalp and lips are somewhat dry today, to say the least. I somehow forgot that Las Vegas is in the middle of the desert, and is therefore very hot and dry.

Unfortunately, this go-around my good friend Susie came down with appendicitis right before she was scheduled to leave. While we were incredibly sad to have not been able to see her this last weekend, we were so relieved that she was with her family, had access to a hospital and could get the best treatment possible. In other news, this means another trip to Las Vegas is being planned for the year. While I would very much like to respect the age-old adage that “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” some things are too exciting to not share. Rachel and I are two peas in a pod when it comes to our social life in the Bay Area, but we have somehow not ever made it to Vegas together. I was glad we could finally remedy that, and took a few nice photos to document our trip. Meanwhile Rachel, who always thinks on her feet, took some blackmail-worthy photographs and videos of yours truly. Which is now why I must always remain friends with her. We had one hell of a time, to say the least.

Did I mention that we saw Avicii DJ at XS Nightclub? Because we did. And it was amazing.

Also, Saturday night was the night that my other shoe broke while dancing. I hobbled around for the rest of the night, but it was worth it.

Ah, to be young.

Five Things

Happy Wednesday everyone!

So far, it’s off to a good start! Aside from my cupcake-for-breakfast slip up, I am being a successful adult this week. I’ve run errands, balanced a full work schedule, done my taxes, and have slowly but surely begun packing for my upcoming weekend getaway. My challenge this week will be to fit all of my clothing in a carry on. And by carry on, I mean my Longchamps Le Pliage bag. Yikes! I believe it can be done, especially give the fact that the majority of my packing will consist of cotton dresses and swimsuits. More on these adventures later this week. For now, have fun with Five Things!

Watch Me Bake

Hello all!

I have been a long time follower of food blogs. Some of my most favorite recipes have come from the  Smitten Kitchen, and many of us know the lovely Ree Drummond of The Pioneer Woman. I so admire these ladies and their ability to create original recipes, something that I, despite the joy I find in cooking and baking, have never really attempted before. It goes without saying that I’m not counting my childhood forays in to creating my own cookie recipe which resulted in something resembling chocolate chip bread lumps. I have been far more conservatively creative since then. This morning, I attempted to document my own baking adventures, involving a box of questionable cupcake mix. And by questionable I mean that no grown adult would ever attempt to make something so ridiculous.

Step one involved coffee. As in, I needed coffee before attempting to follow any kind of instructions.

IMG_1149Yes, ladies and gentlemen. Watermelon cupcakes.

IMG_1150

Step 2: Prepping the work space. Luckily I have an abnormal surplus of cupcake tin liners.

IMG_1151

Mixing all the ingredients. It somewhat resembled a science experiment gone awry. And yes, the batter did smell  disturbingly like watermelon.

IMG_1154

IMG_1164

The pouring of the batter is undoubtedly the hardest part. There was some fallout.

IMG_1155

IMG_1156

IMG_1158I’m not entirely sure how this happened, but some batter ended up on my floor. Yikes.

IMG_1157

After pouring the pink slime, er, cupcake batter, they simply went in the oven for 17 minutes and

Voilà!

IMG_1162

We have our watermelon cupcakes!

IMG_1159

For the final touch, of course Betty Crocker created a matching watermelon frosting. Also watermelon flavored and very reminiscent of Bubblicious watermelon gum.

IMG_1166

Frosting my slightly deformed cupcake that I may or may not have accidentally stuck my finger in. Since I intend to bring these beauties to dinner at a friend’s house, I figured I could reserve the less than perfect cupcakes for a taste test.

IMG_1168The end result! The taste is quite interesting, and vaguely watermelon-like. I now have 24 of these cupcakes at my disposal. Luckily, these are being served as dessert for a weekly Taco Tuesday dinner. I say luckily because I feel like the taste of these will vastly be improved with the addition of  tequila.

Ridiculous or not, simply looking at them makes me happy.

Enjoy your Tuesday, everyone!

A 20-something’s Guide to Alameda

Hello everyone and happy Friday!

alamedacollage

I’m sure many of you can agree with me when I say it is somewhat anti-climactic to return to your childhood home following your college years. Although practically born and raised in Alameda, I’ve found this town to be quite different from what I remember as a child. To put it lightly, the things you do for amusement at seven are quite different from the things you do for amusement at 27.  Now armed with a bank card, a driver’s license, and no curfew, I’ve spent that last few years re-discovering my hometown. While a bit of a “sleepy town” in the shadow of a big city, Alameda is home to quite a few gems. I’ve put together a quick list of my favorites today, and hope to elaborate a bit more as time goes by. Let me know if you find this helpful, dear readers, as I’m hoping to continue on with a guide to my favorite places in the whole East Bay as well.

Breakfast/Coffee Time!

  • Blue Dot Cafe & CoffeebarFor the most delicious chai lattes and scones.
  • Cafe Jolie. Amazing eggs benedict and breakfast with a French twist.
  • Julie’s Coffee and Tea. Choco-chai. Need I say more?
  • Jim’s On the Course. Good, old-fashioned breakfast with a view
  • The Beanery. In the Alameda Markethall
  • Little House CafeA bit of charm for your day.
  • The Red Onion. Delicious eggs and waffles.
  • East Ocean Seafood. If you’re in the mood for Dim Sum…

Lunch!

  • Yellowtail Japanese Bistro. For the freshest sushi lunch around
  • Jay’s Coffee, Teas & Treats. Fantastic sandwiches, wrapped up in a bow.
  • Jonathan’s Sandwich House. Your mom & pop sandwich shop. Owned by the loveliest family.
  • House of Bagels. Home of my favorite veggie sandwich.
  • Sushi King. The best take-out sushi of all time. Also fantastic for dinner.

Dinner!

  • Dragon Rouge. Waterfront Vietnamese food. Delicious
  • Burma SuperstarCan’t recommend their Rainbow Salad enough! Beware of the long lines!
  • Five Guys Burgers. When you have to have a cheeseburger.
  • Scolari’s. For late night, grab-and-go dinners. Don’t let the size fool you!
  • East End Pizza. In the Alameda Markethall. One of my newest favorites! Delicious thin-crust pizza.
  • King of Thai Noodle. My favorite, inexpensive Thai restaurant of all time. Have been known to come here over a fancy dinner elsewhere.

Drinks!

  • Forbidden Island Tiki Lounge. I’ve celebrated many birthdays (and Mondays) here. Not a bad drink on the menu.
  • Lucky 13. For a no-frills glass of beer.
  • The Hobnob. Fantastic truffle fries to accompany any cocktail
  • Habanas. Home of my favorite happy-hour, and delicious mojitos.
  • Rock Wall Winery. Alameda’s very own winery on the historic naval base
  • St. George Spirits. A distillery unlike any other. Take a tour!
  • La Penca Azul. Anytime a margarita is necessary. Don’t miss their $8 bottomless mimosa Saturdays!

Have a good weekend!

5 Things

Hello everyone and happy Wednesday!

Do you ever have those kind of weeks where you feel like you have so much to do, but nowhere near enough time to do them? I’m in the middle of one of those weeks right now. I am desperately trying to tie up all my loose ends well in advance, but with my plans constantly moving and changing, I find it hard to focus on just one task at a time. One thing that I so enjoy about blogging is that it forces me to focus on whatever I might be thinking or wanting to write about at the time. I try to get from beginning to end in one sitting, as often as I can. I have a horrible tendency to over-think a lot of the work that I do, so it’s very liberating to sit and “crank out” the work that I can, without too much intense scrutiny from yours truly.

With all that, let’s get to my five things of the week! I could also rename this: “Things I Saw This Weekend,” but where’s the fun in that?

IMG_1008(Miss Moscow Mule and Lady Greyhound had a night on the town. There may have been some disco pants involved.)

IMG_1009(Nothing makes a late-night walk home simultaneously more pleasant and more difficult than the smell of freshly baked donuts. Delicious.)

IMG_1010

(It’s starting to feel like spring! Admiring the blooming tree-lined streets on my way to Alameda Beach.)

IMG_1013(Oh, yeah. That’s why I live here. Look at that spectacular view! Impressive even on a cloudy day.)

(Am mildly obsessed with this song cover by the lovely Lily Ahlberg. Pause it, play it…)

It’s the Little Things

Hello everyone!

I’ve been contemplating as to whether or not to change my “Five Things” series to “It’s the Little Things.” Or does this sound too Hallmark Channel family special? You will have to let me know.

Looking back at this last week’s photos does make me quite happy- it’s been a good, busy week. I will admit that I truly enjoy being busy, but only if I’m busy with things that I truly enjoy. That makes sense, right? I’ve been dancing quite a bit (rehearsal in the mornings, class in the evenings), writing, studying, reading, and the other day I even made my own pasta sauce! From scratch. I’ve been feeling quite a bit like this little girl, lately. Complete with the cheerleading moves.

IMG_0808

(Beautiful antique cocktail glasses I was gifted for Christmas. Am searching for a special occasion to use these.)

IMG_0934

(An Earl Grey macaroon from Feel Good Bakery. Complete with a latte from Blue Bottle. Perfection.)

IMG_0922

(My last Valentine’s truffle. White chocolate strawberry. So cute.)

IMG_0876

(My favorite study partner. A cup of Choco-Chai from Julie’s Coffee & Tea in Alameda. Topped with homemade whipped cream.)

IMG_0875(Hey look! It’s three drinks instead of two! Tropical mojitos at one of my old haunts: Habanas. My friends and I have such fond memories here.)

Happy Wednesday!

Five Things

Hello everyone!

Wednesday is here already! It’s been an awfully long week already, but the weekend is in sight! Sort of…

I’ve been looking forward to today this whole week because I have this fabulous performance to go to tonight!

San Francisco Ballet is hosting the Hamburg Ballet for two nights only. They’re performing one of my favorite ballets of all time: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” choreographed by John Neumeier. His version of “The Little Mermaid” blew me away years ago, so I can’t wait to see what he’s done with this Shakespearean classic. I can tell just by the short video blurb that it’s going to be visually stunning. Only legitimate ballerinas can pull off holographic unitards. A review to follow!

In other news:

IMG_0820(My latest bookstore purchases. Random, just like me.)

Here’s the latest I’m reading! I have a CBEST study guide (boo! I don’t know what I’m doing with that, we’ll see), Allie Brosh’s new book, and  a gem of a biography on Jackie Kennedy Onassis. This last one fell in my lap as I was searching for something completely different at the bookstore. It chronicles her lifelong love of books and the influence they had on her life. I’ve always looked up to JKO, but something in this biography “clicked” for me. She was an incredible patron of the arts and the ballet, and made a name for herself in the publishing world. Both things I ultimately aspire to. I can’t put it down.

IMG_0816

(Target decor. On sale!)

I stumbled upon these guys the other day and it took all my willpower not to purchase them. My favorite has to be: “Dear Coffee, I love you. That is all.” It’s absolutely something I would say.

IMG_0787(Here’s the part where I show you pictures of my weird cat!)

Imagine waking to this face staring at you. She’s an odd duck, she is. In this moment, she was perched on my lap, upright, and we were staring at each other. I swear, we’re two peas in a pod sometimes. Oh, and I’m a cat lady. Just so you know.

IMG_0553(My favorite donuts in SF)

I have had the worst hankering for donuts this last week. I blame the dreary weather. From left to right, you are looking at a Caramel de sel, chocolate rose, strawberries & cream filled, hibiscus beet (Yes, BEET), passion fruit milk chocolate, and orange cardamom donuts. I’ll let that sink in. Hopefully it will sustain you for the next week.

Happy Wednesday!

A love letter to one of my favorite cities…

Dear San Francisco,

I think you’re swell.

IMG_0638

You may not be the biggest, brightest, or most diverse city in the world, but I like you just the same. When I was younger it was my dream to get to know you better, and I have. Even after all these years, there’s still so much to learn about you. There’s always new sights to see, neighborhoods to discover, and delicious things to eat.

IMG_0429

(A beautiful view of Downtown from Potrero Hill)

IMG_0556

(Infamous Mission Dolores Park)

I like that I can take my parents to meet you, and that you almost always make a good impression on my friends. We do need to talk about how grossly expensive your rent is and how smelly you get sometimes. Your hygiene could be improved, and some of those tech guys you hang out with can be a real pain-in-the-ass.

IMG_0113

But I really do love your cooking. You make the best coffee and donuts around. I’m glad I don’t live with you, or else I would weigh 500 pounds.

IMG_0555

(Dynamo Donuts! Chocolate Rose, Caramel de Sel, and Strawberries and Cream)

IMG_0341

(Bombolinis with cream filling at the Ferry Building)

You have some of the best people watching around, and I enjoy how accepting you are of everyone from all walks of life. You can be a little rough around the edges, but you’re full of hidden gems. I love all your different neighborhoods- it’s like twenty little cities in one. If I feel like shopping all day, I can meet you downtown. In the Mission, I can find the best food: Cuban, Italian, Mexican, French, fusion. The people watching and the coffee is always fantastic there. I go the Marina when I want to surround myself with young people, beautiful neighborhoods, or maybe some of the finer things in life. The Haight is colorful and entertaining to explore, and I can find my favorite hot toddy in the Castro, along with the most beautiful views of the city.

So maybe you could call me sometime? Or I could call you? There are other cities for me to explore, and so many things for me to see. I would hate for you to miss out.

Love,

EVA♥
