Five Things

Hello everyone!

It’s Wednesday already, and time for my weekly ritual of Five Things. Unfortunately, I’m horribly predictable and this week’s theme seems to be food, coffee, and cute things. I’m perhaps doomed to be a horribly girly individual for the rest of my days. I’m hoping that some of my readers, like me, will appreciate the little things in life. Like latte art. That’s totally relevant to being a 20-something urbanite, right?

IMG_1905

This, unabashedly, was my dinner yesterday. Flourless chocolate cake covered in creme anglaise. I came late to a birthday dinner, missed the meal, and thought, “Screw it! I’m having desert anyway.”

IMG_1904

I found myself sharing this amazing little guy from Instagram with many people yesterday. Having a bad day? LOOK AT THIS. I dare you to be upset while staring at this winking dog. The cherry on the sundae was when one of my teenage student’s exclaimed: “Where’s his eye?!”

IMG_1888

I attended my dear friend Devyn’s wedding this last weekend (post coming soon!) and couldn’t stop admiring this little girl. Possibly one of the most beautiful toddlers I have ever seen- like a real life Precious Moments doll. Remember those?

IMG_1794

When Portland’s Salt and Straw is closed in the morning (and hence not a possible breakfast option) make a dash to Barista, the coffee shop across the street. Road trip fuel!

IMG_1903

It’s that time of year again! When my favorite salad in the whole world is back at Panera. I look forward to their massive Strawberry Poppyseed Chicken salad every summer. It’s the freshest, most delicious thing I can think of for lunch on a hot day.

And the adventure continues…

Hello everyone!

Continuing on from yesterday’s post “Portland Adventures,” I bring you the “Seattle Adventures” episode of Watch Me Juggle! Things in Seattle have changed quite a bit since my trip up five years ago. On my last visit following college graduation, my dear friend Brooke was getting married; on this trip, I got to visit her beautiful home and meet her son Cooper, who is now already six months old! Another friend of mine, Kelsey hosted us in her cozy apartment, and took us for a night out on Seattle’s Capitol Hill. I frankly can’t imagine how we crammed so many activities in a day-and-a-half, but we did! We ate delicious food, went wine tasting, went sailing, and perused Pike’s Place Market. I even played skee-ball for the first time in my young life. People seemed perturbed when I told them this: “Didn’t you ever go to Chuck E.Cheese as a kid?!” Yes, yes I did. But, I was far too busy playing in the ball pit to worry about things that involved any sort of hand-eye coordination. Now, dear readers, brace yourself for many photos:

We made life vests look good.

IMG_1759

Beautiful views of Downtown Seattle while sailing about.

IMG_1755

Apparently the boats have the right of way when it comes to navigating the waters. Sea planes took off on a regular basis all around us. Quite wonderful to watch.

IMG_1764

The famous fish market at Pike’s Place. I got to see the fish fly on many occasions!

IMG_1770

Huge bouquets at the flower market. I wished I could have taken them home with me…

IMG_1774

My very favorite: beautiful peonies.

IMG_1775

Hey! Looks like Rachel’s love of ginger finally paid off!

IMG_1778

We discovered a welcoming winery near the market that had local wines and board games. What more could you ask for?

IMG_1782 IMG_1783

Our flights. I had the sparkling wines, naturally. After a game of Apples to Apples (the girls won!), we decided it would be much more entertaining to play with the boy. He was an enthusiastic sport.

IMG_1791

Sweetest face ever.

IMG_1737

Blurry photo with phantom hand! The decor here seemed like exotic hunting lodge meets carnival. Iiiiinteresting.

IMG_1739

Ladies out on the town at Unicorn Bar. As seen on the Macklemore Thrift Shop music video. The bar, not the ladies…

IMG_1740

Delicious, but sweet cocktails with very inappropriate names.

I miss it already. Until next time, Seattle!

Portland Adventures

Hello ladies and gentlemen!

I’m honestly a bit behind on updating Watch Me Juggle as of late. Not that I haven’t been posting, but I’ve had such a busy last two weeks, I’ve had such an influx of material/thoughts/adventures I haven’t been able to keep up! I’m well aware that this isn’t really a problem. So, today’s post features a long overdue look at my time spent in Portland over this last Memorial Day weekend. Also fondly known as: “That time we ate all the things.”

That’s right, dear readers. The itinerary for Portland, aside from spending time with some good friends, was to eat as many delicious, Portland-specific culinary concoctions we could find. We were very successful.

IMG_1685

A glimpse at Rogue Brewing Company as we drive by…

IMG_1690

The first Portland hipster sighting!

IMG_1692

Portland is undoubtedly home to some lovely looking Victorians- not unlike my hometown!

IMG_1699

The bar at the Barrel Room. In case you’re unable to find it. Upon arriving here, our unruly group was absolutely convinced that we had annoyed our poor taxi driver to his wit’s end and that he was throwing us out. IMG_1700

A moment between friends.

IMG_1705

One of my very favorite stops had to be Salt and Straw. I’m a fan of artisan ice creams on any occasion, and had a big bowl of both honey lavender and sea salt caramel ripple ice cream. A phenomenal combination. This was also the place I’ve tasted one of the most peculiar things of my life: mint leaf and sea urchin ice cream. Yes, it was actually quite tasty.

IMG_1714

As an alternative to the ever-crowded Voodoo Doughnuts, our lovely host took us to the delicious Blue Star Donuts. They had a plethora of intriguing flavors, including a Cointreau-laced crème brûlée, with a beaker of Cointreau literally stuck in the donut itself.

IMG_1710 IMG_1709

Meyer lemon with key lime custard, and blackberry compote with peanut butter powdered sugar. Delicious.

IMG_1711

My choice of the morning: Blueberry, bourbon, basil. Breakfast of Champions.

Not pictured are our many forays in to food truck dining- complete with American-Moroccan fusion food in the form of spiced Basmati rice topped with the makings of a Philly cheese steak. In short, even if you aren’t a foodie, I highly recommend spending some time in this part of the Pacific Northwest. Its small town feel and tree-lined streets are beautiful and worth taking in any time of year.

Five Things

Hello everyone!

I want to start out by thanking everyone that has read my previous post. The outpouring of kindness has been a bit overwhelming, but wonderful. While I was on the fence about doing “yet another” Five Things this Wednesday, and while I’ve been feeling a bit down lately, I think it’s really important to simply acknowledge this and carry on! I was especially saddened to hear of the great Maya Angelou’s passing this morning. She was a pillar of strength- a bearer of things artistic, compassionate, and quintessentially human. I feel I speak for all of us when I write that she will be sorely missed.

phenomenal woman

One of my favorite poems of all time.

Our view

I wanted to share this silly little photo with you, dear readers. It commemorates my last summer living in Isla Vista, directly on the beach. This was my view every morning (complete with the requisite ratty old couch). Add a big bowl of Golden Oh’s and what more could you ask for?

I came across these 40 Amazing Facts About the Human Body the other day. They’re fascinating, to say the least. I also find it particularly amusing that we share 50% of our DNA with bananas.

I wanted to commemorate my favorite late night meal (with one of my favorite people) on the blog today. For those of you that are not familiar with Santa Barbara, it is home to the infamous Freebirds restaurant. Open 24/7, you can find orders of steak nachos so big, they can be split between three people and still be too much food. It is also home of some of the most entertaining people watching around 2:30am on a Sunday morning.

And lastly,

I rarely do this sort of thing on Watch Me Juggle, but I also wanted to take the time to ask you, dear readers to go to http://everytown.org, and consider fulfilling the request of Richard Martinez, who lost his only son this last Friday. He has asked the following of us, and I believe it’s well worth everyone taking some time out to consider:

“Today, I’m going to ask every person I can find to send a postcard to every politician they can think of with three words on it: Not One More. People are looking for something to do. I’m asking people to stand up for something. Enough is enough.”

Love,

Weekend Rituals

Hello everyone,

One of my favorite things to do on restless Sundays (as I’ve written about previously) is going to local farmer’s markets. Now that we’re approaching summer, I find myself earnestly looking forward to all the seasonal fruit at my favorite waterfront market in Oakland. This last run, I stocked up on stone fruit and some vine-ripened tomatoes. One thing that I can never pass up, however, are the big fragrant bunches of basil you can find for little over a dollar. Of course, I then have to think of new and creative ways to use said basil. My go-to is always a little Caprese salad, or, in this case, Caprese salad wedged in a fresh-baked ciabatta roll with a dollop of olive oil on the side for dipping. The perfect warm-weather meal, if you ask me.

Cheers,

Five Things

Hello everyone and Happy Wednesday!

You’ve made it to Wednesday on the week before a long weekend! Which means, it’s really Thursday, if my math serves me correctly. In other news, pervasive fatigue seems to have taken over all of my people. Everyone is dragging, including myself. Honestly, I think this may have something to do with the fact that my boyfriend is broken. By boyfriend, I mean my coffee maker, and broken referring to the fact that all it seems to do now is crank out espresso like sludge. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it’s quite distressing. I think everyone is long overdue for a little vacation. I’m getting ready for a road trip up the coast to Portland and Seattle at the end of this week, so look for those adventures soon on Watch Me Juggle!

Continuing on to this week’s Five Things, I’ve been loving the articles on The Bold Italic lately. It’s quirky, San Francisco-specific pieces make me laugh and give me a little something to think about at the end of the day. Where else would you find trite little gems like this?

hoodhaikus

Photo from Chris Michel, c/o The Bold Italic

Yes, they are Haikus inspired by all the different neighborhoods in San Francisco. Concise and accurate, my favorites have to be those depicting the Mission, Fisherman’s Wharf, and North Beach. Click the picture above to read them all!

IMG_1662

I’ve featured my beloved glass Camelbak water bottle on Five Things before, however, the fabulous boss-lady liked mine so much she purchased its twin at Athleta recently. So now we can mix up our water bottles as well as our coffee tumblers (which are also matching).

Excuse my giant man hand.

Word has gotten out that Miss Eva likes candy, specifically gummy worms/bears.  I have received multiple packs of gummies from my students over the last weeks and couldn’t be happier. Pictured above are Gummy Rattlesnakes, delivered by one of the fantastic mothers at my school. So thoughtful! I was very amused by the level of detail on this little Haribo candy- look closely and you can see the eyes and a little squiggle design on the body. Too bad I had to eat it.

IMG_1661

Speaking of cute things, I was tooling around Baby Gap the other day, buying a little something-something for the little chunk I’m finally going to meet in Seattle this coming weekend, and I found this! It’s a knit crab hat. I just about died. Too bad I don’t know a child with a head small enough to fit in it, or I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

IMG_0072

I’m excited to announce that it’s peony season once again! I celebrate peony season the way other people celebrate football season. It’s just really exciting. I love those gorgeous flowers, especially the deep, wine colored blossoms. They’re the Scarlet O’Hara of the flower world. Yes, I just wrote that. I’m not ashamed.

Five Things

Happy yet-another-Wednesday everyone!

I can’t pretend I’m not enjoying the unseasonably warm weather here in the Bay. It’s a beautiful day out and it seems everyone is out and about. This unfortunately meant I couldn’t make my ballet class this morning, yet I’m still optimistic about getting some dancing in today. So, without further ado: 5 things!

IMG_1550It was such a nice day out yesterday, so I decided to treat myself to the most sophisticated popsicle I could find: Gelateria Naia’s Bar Gelato. My new favorite is undoubtedly the Blue Bottle Coffee. It’s the adult equivalent of a pacifier. If only I had someone to shove one of these in my mouth when I woke up every morning. It might actually make me a morning person.

IMG_1518On my “lost” adventures in San Francisco last week, I stumbled upon a really curious fragrance line by the name of “Replica.” It’s goal is essentially to produce fragrances that replicate specific environments and the sense memories associated with them. My favorite had to be Beach Walk. Delicious.

IMG_1520

A t-shirt, also discovered during last week’s wanderings about. Light as a feather, and so random…

IMG_1538

Look! It’s a beautiful sunset with the beautiful city on the horizon.

Ending on a lighthearted note, I leave you with this:

I adore comedian Jim Gaffigan. I also agree with many of his food-related tirades. If you enjoy this, I highly recommend you watch his stand-up “Beyond the Pale.” He’s the kind of non-offensive comedian you can tell your parents about and not be wildly embarrassed. Even better, if you have cool parents, they’ll understand.

Instant Staycation

Hi everyone!

There’s something about certain foods and behaviors that I associate with being on vacation. The connection I often fail to make is the fact that one does not necessarily have to be directly on some tropical beach to get their hands on a mai tai or fresh pineapple. You also don’t need to be even remotely on vacation to forgo pants for a dress, wear less makeup, and bust out a fabulous fake tan. Now, I’m lucky enough to live 2 minutes from the nearest beach, so I really have no excuse. This, I decided to have a little “staycation” of my own. Inspired by this delicious looking recipe on Refinery29, I made a dash to my local Trader Joe’s the minute they opened. I armed myself with pineapple, strawberries, some coconut milk, and chia seeds before running home. Until recently, I found chopping up an entire pineapple a daunting task, but it’s really quite easy and requires little skill. Simply twist and pull off the “stalk,” and cut along the top, bottom, and lengthwise until your pineapple resembles, well…a pineapple. Pair some cold pineapple hunks with some fresh coffee, go out on your porch (if you have one) and enjoy the sunshine. It’s one of the best breakfasts ever. While I was feeling ambitious today, I also whipped up some chia seed pudding, which could not have been easier. You literally need only two or three ingredients:

IMG_1540Mix 1 cup coconut milk,  1/4 cup chia seeds, and a little something sweet. I love the flavor you get with Orgeat, but you could also use plain old sugar, agave, or honey. Let the mixture sit for a few hours so the seeds can absorb the liquid, and voilà! You have pudding. It’s magic, and good for you!

IMG_1543

I chopped up some strawberries to add on top of the finished pudding, with some pineapple on the side, of course. In future, I’ll be sure to make this in the evenings, so I can enjoy it first thing in the morning.

To improve your staycation experience, I recommend bringing a little bit of that vacation atmosphere to your home. I’m a fan of Slatkin and Co.’s Coconut Water scented candle. It’s a non-offensive summer scent that’s not too overpowering. Throw a little sea salt spray in your hair (I love the below version from Lush) and maybe a little Hawaiian Tropic and you’re good to go! Should you be in the position to get a little sun, do so safely! Wear sunscreen at all times, even when trying to get some color. I love the Maui Babe Browning Lotion for this, but only for short stretches of time. An all-over burn is never a good look, and we don’t want to look like a used handbag in our old age. Last but not least, if you’re looking for a quintessential summer fragrance, check out Bobbi Brown’s Beach. It smells just like it sounds: the perfect combination of sunscreen, salt, and jasmine- very light and clean.

IMG_1544

Vacation is a state of mind, really. I use it as a mental reset- a way of pulling myself out of the more banal aspects of my routine. There’s no reason you can’t take that sense of calm with you when you leave. While finding time to relax may not be the easiest thing sometimes, it’s such an essential part of life.  At the very least, take advantage of that sunshine and eat something delicious. You sort of owe it to yourself.

Birthday Dinners

Hello everyone!
IMG_1401 IMG_1402 IMG_1403 IMG_1407 IMG_1412 IMG_1411

Recently, my father had a birthday. I’ve been told that as you get older, it somehow becomes less socially acceptable to make a big hoopla around that time of the year. My youngest students often come in each weekend with another party on their social calendar that they absolutely have to tell me about. These always involve bounce houses, ice skating, princesses, cake… and whatever else you can think of. As a kid, I imagined adult birthdays to be a sad occasion where balloons were frowned upon and presents were things like calculators or toilet paper. (Ok, in all honesty, I did get facewash one year for my birthday, but so what? It was Clinique!)

This year, I decided to take my parents somewhere they had never been before for the big birthday celebration; partially to expose them to wonderful new things, and partially for my own entertainment. I had had one of the most amazing meals at Foreign Cinema in the Mission last year, and it has quickly become my go-to restaurant for special occasions. It’s airy and non-pretentious, a gem in the most unlikely of neighborhoods. To add a bit of whimsy to an already unique restaurant, the venue doubles as a theater of sorts, showing movies on the white-washed wall of the building overlooking the courtyard.(For more details…you can find them here!) The food there has changed my perception of dining experiences, to say the least. Following  our first course of brandade, (a dish I was completely unfamiliar with until I tasted it here), I told my mother that on my first visit, the dishes here made my cooking seem like something I had pulled out of the garbage disposal and slapped on a plate. Being a self-proclaimed foodie, the presentation and combinations of flavors fascinated me. Luckily, my parents and I had different enough tastes that we were able to all order a variety of dishes and sample them all. My father had the sesame fried chicken, my mother the duck, and I chose the seared tuna. Admittedly, Foreign Cinema is one of the few restaurants that I go to where half of the ingredients on the menu are entirely foreign to me. Just pick something and go with it! Notably, this is also the kind of restaurant that will tell you the origin of the lettuce in your salad. So very California. Luckily, the dishes here are so perfectly portioned, I can always squeeze in dessert. The chevre cheesecake here is amazing, as is the chocolate pot de crème served alongside caramel popcorn.  Possibly one of my favorite moments of the evening had to be when the server presented my father with his requested crème brûlée and a candle, which he insisted on letting melt on to the plate for as long as possible. The ladies at the table next to us all wished him a happy birthday, and I managed to capture a photo of him beaming.

Sure, turning another year older isn’t that difficult to do, but we sure are lucky when it happens. It’s a good time to be thankful for your health, as well as the pleasure of the company that surrounds you on that day, whoever they may be. Also, it’s a great excuse to eat some really good food.

Cheers,

EVA
